Saint James Regional Catholic School Grade One

Religion The primary goal of our program is to help each child recognize their specialness and experience God’s love.  It is important that we instill a love for all by treating others the way Jesus loves us.  Prayer, Christ-like attitudes, and our faith in action including attendance at Mass are crucial to the spiritual development of your child.

ELA Language/Reading and Writing All subjects including reading, spelling, grammar and writing skills are blended together to enhance language.

Math Hands on experiences and the use of manipulatives provide students with an understanding of math concepts.

Homework HW Homework will be listed on our website.  Each child is responsible for specific homework assignments.  Children will mark HW on the page to be completed.  Reading word lists from handbook must be practiced daily.  Math written HW will be on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  Spelling is given weekly with a test at the end of each lesson.  All homework pages need to be signed.  Your signature indicates approval of correctness and neatness.  The website is updated regularly, please check it regularly.

Home Folder Each child will receive a sturdy folder to hold Panda Bear paper and other important papers.  This folder is to be taken home each day.  Loose papers may be taken out at the end of the week unless specified.

Calendar  To reinforce the positive, a paper with specific behaviors will be marked.  Unacceptable behavior will be indicated on the back.  An acceptable day will be indicated on the calendar side with a stamp or sticker.  Please place your initials each day in the box.  Keep the ca;endar paper in the plastic sheet in your child’s folder for the present marking period.

Correspondence All correspondence, notes and money should be in an envelope marked with the child’s name and room number.  When your child is absent, please use an index card and state the reason for absence.

All belongings should have proper identification It is recommended that all workbooks be covered with clear contact for easy identification.  It is not necessary to cover copybooks or their reading books.  Children need at least 5 sharpened pencils daily.

Dismissal A note must accompany any change of dismissal lines.  Or call the office before lunch to allow for proper notification.

Discipline Please be supportive as warnings are issued.  Children need to be held responsible for their actions.

Books Books are sent home for several reasons.  Check for HW on the page for written homework.  Books are guides for what is being taught.  Skills may need to be practiced.  Sign any pages and make corrections to any mistakes.

Story Time and Crafts Volunteers to read and or do a craft with the children are welcomed.  Let us know and a schedule will be sent home.  Please be advised legal forms are necessary for any volunteer work done in school.  Check the office for details.

Snack Recess Children may bring a healthy snack (no candy please) for snack recess.  They may have a drink (water or juice bag) and a small snack.  Pretzels can be purchased for the week.  This money is due the Friday before the order.

Birthdays Birthdays may be celebrated in our class only.  No food items are allowed.  Invitations to parties must be for all classmates or all gender specific classmates.
